In my homeland of Kerala, India, there is a traditional necklace that is made out of gold coins. It is called a, 'Kasu Mala.' In our native tongue, Malayalam, 'kasu' means 'coin' and 'maala' translates to 'necklace.' Today, there is a modern 'Kasu Mala' getting significant street style credibility. This one is more free-spirited in style and in affordable silver. I purchased one of these modern day 'Kasu Malas' from Free People. It is a bib necklace that I get many compliments on---even from my mom and aunts who are used to the traditional Indian gold version! Yes, my silver coin necklace is a bit heavy but it's worth it. It turns any somewhat simple outfit into something unique. Free People sells several varieties of coin necklaces so you can have your own 'Kasu Mala.'
